DMT & My Occult Mind

This is the post excerpt.

Between October 2013 and December 2017, I established my own home-based research programme aimed at exploring and investigating the effects of smoking freebase DMT. I had a very definite intention in mind – to understand the causal nature of the experience beyond inhaling the potent vapour. Employing a mindset long influenced by esoteric and occult philosophies, I came to understand the DMT experience in its fullness is a very direct and very profound interaction with powerful spiritual entities.

I began with no intention to publish my work. However, the more I researched and the more I wrote, the more I wanted to share my accounts of these truly amazing life-changing encounters. Writing gave me the opportunity to integrate and to rationalise my experiences into my rapidly changing mindset. Writing also gave me the opportunity to share several paranormal experiences from my childhood; experiences which now seemed to make more sense, and seemed to hold more relevance to the research I was engaged with.

In February 2017, I published the research from my first year of investigation.

DMT & My Occult Mind

Independent DMT Research (Breaking Convention 2017 – presentation script)

It is a great pleasure for me to be able to share my research; thank you for your interest. As I began penning this presentation, I realised just how little I would be able to cover in half an hour, and how many giant literary steps I would need to take in order to squeeze in all that I felt was relevant. I aim to cover quite a lot of ground, so without further ado let me outline the preliminaries of my three year research programme. I used freebase DMT. It’s easier just to say that I smoked it. The first half of my programme was conducted indoors. The second half of my programme was conducted mainly outdoors, in my garden. I maintained eyes open in all but a few experiments. My preference was for daylight hours. My posture was nearly always recumbent. Before committing fully to my research programme I gave up drinking alcohol and I abstained from masturbating. One had always been more of a habit than the other. One other thing I consider to be of significance was that I researched alone, without a sitter. On only three or four occasions did I invite my wife to sit aside me while I explored the effects of DMT. What I did not fully appreciate at the outset, was the importance of the intention behind my research. That intention was to understand the causal nature of the DMT experience, beyond inhaling the potent vapour.

My mental approach to the research was to repeatedly ignore my fears; to ignore the voice of my ego as it frequently tried to argue that it did not want me to lie down on the floor, and did not want me to fill my lungs with potent vapour. There were times when I became my own hero, and occasions when cowardice triumphed. The Nike slogan, “Just do it,” became the frequent call of my still shy higher self, as I forced myself to sit up, engage the flame, and commence my research. Between October 2013 and December 2016, I committed to over 600 experiments.

Main findings

From those preliminaries I will move onto my main findings. It likely comes as no surprise that DMT is a very powerful amplifier of human consciousness; but that applies both literally and qualitatively. Literally, one’s mind undergoes a very rapid expansion far beyond its latent state. Qualitatively, one’s thoughts and one’s feelings may lurch to extremes – including the extreme of indifference.

DMT-amplified human consciousness serves as a signal that is of great interest to conscious and intelligent lifeforms; beings that are otherwise unseen and presently outside the cataloguing of life as we know it. We can choose to call these spiritual beings; conscious energies; intelligent discarnate entities; or even aliens – though I disfavour that term myself.

Amplified human consciousness exhibits an uncommon high density, and unusual perceptive qualities that are at once sensible within and without the researcher. The field of consciousness of the manifesting spiritual entity can exhibit extreme density, and has the capacity to temporarily meld its mind into the amplified consciousness of the researcher, thereby imposing varying degrees of mesmerisation, and commonly enabling the entity to impose highly defined visions upon the researcher – one is effectively temporarily engulfed within the mind of another. The uncommon density of that ‘mind-stuff’ creates the appearance of a reality that appears far more real than ordinary everyday reality.

The spiritual entities engaging in these interactions are able to manipulate their field of consciousness – their body-of-mind, if you will. This includes a capacity to compose a bizarre quasi-physical-like substance; one with the capacity to operate invasively; the ability to operate with mobility, the ability to be moulded creatively; and the ability to exhibit extreme strength and incredible subtleness.

In addition, and perhaps most importantly, they have the capacity to manipulate the human psyche – inducing extremes of emotion from fervent ecstasy, to confused befuddlement, inducing profoundly terrifying fear, as well as wreaking total mental insensibility.

They have the capacity to quickly and sequentially squeeze extreme emotions from the human psyche; in a manner that seems almost to define the terrain and the qualities of humanness. In such encounters one almost feels that one is a puppet, being expertly manipulated by a very powerful and a very skilful puppet master.

Several more things

  1. The potency of DMT – even without any interaction from a spiritual entity – is such that it can induce extremely overwhelming blissful states; wherein one feels completely aloof from humanity; one feels so completely and utterly serene that the only vague concern one has – as one comes down from that heavenly state – is whether the creator of the universe was cognisant of the event. For the event really does feel like an occurrence of universal import and significance.
  2. Specific to outdoor research is the frequent observation of what some would term as black orb UFO’s. Of course, one should be ornithologically minded, so as not to mix up the mysterious with the mundane – one must be sure that one does not confuse the feathered with the esoteric. And – earth lights; balls of light of varying size, that operate seemingly playfully, and can manifest at close proximity. It is notable that such sightings induce a huge transformation in mood. Quickly moving one to almost childlike exuberance.
  1. There is no amount of words, no quality of words, and no sequence of words that can convey the truly awesome phenomenal power that these beings can impose as they undergo rapid increases in both frequency and intensity, over mere seconds. It is simply unimaginable. Indoors or outdoors, one’s immediate environment feels to have suddenly filled with an energy that is perceptibly and singularly impossibly solid, and yet all pervasive. The extent to which that power manifests seems to have a proportionate relationship to the degree of mesmerisation imposed upon the researcher.
  1. It is on the basis of that incredible capacity to impose unimaginable power within one’s research setting that one can appear to be raised off the ground by some small distance, and thereby experience states of illusory movement, as the being subtly manipulates its body-of-mind beneath one’s recumbent physical body to convincingly create that perception. By and large, depending upon the experience, one usually only becomes aware of this as the experience draws to a close – whereupon one marvels at the softness, the slowness, the subtleness, and near imperceptibility of that slow and short descent.
  1. The experiences seem to have a very gradual initiatory aspect; such that later experiences become far more challenging, and slowly more revealing. Many of my later experiences would have seen me off had they been among my first. In the latter half of my research programme, after heading outdoors, I was able to observe spiritual entities without them imposing hallucinatory visions upon me. That is not to say they were not imposing challenging experiences. But out of all my research, those sights remain by far the most rewarding.
  1. The uncommon high density of amplified human consciousness, and the extreme density of manifested discarnate entities, both display a capacity to transmit sound pressure waves far more readily than air alone. This accounts for apparent increases in the quality of sounds and the volume of sounds. In certain circumstances it also enables direct visual observation of compression and rarefaction phases in low frequency sounds emitted from speaker cones. Conversely, I suggest the capacity of these beings to suddenly create an improbable environmental silence – a complete shutting out of all ambient noise – derives from their ability to form an acoustic barrier; one exhibiting the relevant properties of density, rigidity, and imperforation.
  1. The characteristics of DMT-induced amplified human consciousness seem to proportionally relate to the intensity and the frequency of the energetic reaction that takes place at what feels like the pineal site of the brain. Obviously dose and factors relating to inhalation are relevant. When indoors, with a sufficient dose, amplified human consciousness appears as a visually very obvious field or volume of energy. One which rapidly becomes very turbulent. Here, I would argue the Beer-Lambert law is applicable. This law states that when radiant energy impinges upon a surface it is either transmitted, reflected, or absorbed. It took me a great many indoor experiments to work that out, because it was usually within seconds, if not apparently instantaneously, that something else had arrived and imposed its own power of mind upon me.

Let’s continue and include a few Examples & Notable Experiences

A 35mg dose while sat upon the bed at night time resulted in the bedroom becoming occupied with a circus troupe in full performance. My eyes could still see the bedroom – but it was now filled with numerous and impossible-to-describe performances undertaken by humanlike entities. Everything in my visual field looked far more real than real life. Behind me a row of female can-can dancers moved along the wall, arm in arm, with legs kicking up and out in perfect unison. Suddenly, someone touched my butt cheek – even though my butt cheeks were pressing down upon the bed. I was in an advanced mesmeric state. And thus it took some concerted effort of will for me to say out loud: “I know what you just did.”

No sooner had I said that when every performer within the bedroom turned to look directly at me, all exhibiting great beaming smiles of happiness as I acknowledged what had just occurred.

Now, either I imagined the whole thing; or it just so happened that my bedroom coincided with a circus performance that was already well underway in a parallel dimension commonly referred to as hyperspace. Or, as I contend, a powerful spiritual entity had temporarily melded its mind into my temporarily amplified consciousness – effectively filling the volume of the room – before imposing its imagination upon my visual and mental perception … while at the same time cheekily testing my reaction to a quasi-physical touching of my derrière.

Outside, I have witnessed my consciousness spiralling out of me – a dense, transparent, ethereal torrent, filled with a complex geometric interior, bountifully filling the sky high above me. That such a thing can occur while one’s rational sense remains intact is no less astonishing than the sight itself. Rather oddly, upon seeing so much of my mind-stuff filling the sky, my natural reaction was to feel both vulnerability and great maternal concern; resulting in a somewhat comical response, typical of a loving mother scolding her wayward child: “Oh my God! Look at you! Get yourself back down here immediately! Get back in this house, right now!”

Only a fool underestimates the potency of DMT. And occasionally I have been that fool. The unstoppable intensity of ultra high frequency energy emanating from one’s pineal site is a sure sign the experience will be memorable. Lying in the garden, my consciousness rapidly spirals out of me as a dense, transparent, swirling geometric torrent. My rational capacities have now forsaken me. I barely know what I am – let alone who I am or even where I am.

My senses slowly begin to return. Mouth feels hinged open at an impossible 180 degree angle. Tongue involuntarily sweeps around the inside of my mouth, as though suffering from severe athetosis. Lips feel greatly enlarged and rubberised. And my entire mouth feels improbably well lubricated. The refreshing feeling as my tongue involuntarily sweeps around and around my salivated mouth is an oral pleasure beyond compare.

There is so much of my mind-stuff outside of me that something has arrived to offer assistance. Something is caring for me in a mothering capacity. A portion of its great mind fluidly melds into a potion of my mind. A broad and slightly pendent cylinder of our melded mind-stuff extends out from the top of my head and my forehead. I can feel the incredibly heavy singular density of that broad pendulous mass, both inside and outside my skull. As the being slowly pulls its mind away from my mind, it creates an almost painful suction-like pull upon my brain. This causes long-forgotten and deeply buried memories to stir within me. I have experienced this before. I am sure – as a young bairn, alone in bed at night time….perhaps?

How many highly defined visions must one experience before one begins to feel discontent? How many times can one genuinely be made to feel convinced that one has died, and departed the land of the living?

Did I genuinely suspect I had reached the limits of the DMT experience? Or was I being subtly led toward significant change? A notable experiment in my bedroom, without any visionary content, cemented my suspicion: these experiences were interactions with spiritual entities. I watched in awe as the manifested entity filling the volume of the sunlit bedroom failed to misdirect my attention before its departure.

“I am not missing this,” I voiced aloud, as an incredibly beautiful transparent entity slowly and serenely exited from the bedroom. Now I knew for sure I was dealing with spiritual entities. Or rather, they were dealing with me. And yet despite that knowledge, it made my commitment no easier. If anything, it made it doubly difficult. Because now, not only did I need to trust in the capacity of my own courage, I now needed to invest my trust in the intention of those interacting with me.

On the floor at the top of the staircase I sit up and empty the pipe in three proficient pulls. I lay back down. With great rapidity a spiritual entity manifests and fills the location with intense high frequency energy. Almost in an instant the location becomes ultra highly defined. It now looks more real than real. White paintwork looks impossibly white. Every colour is greatly amplified and every surface appears true and pristine, without defect, blemish or imperfection. Highly defined hallucinatory scenery and highly defined humanlike entities are present. Their actions are related to the intense high frequency energy that is both audible and perceptible – and so overwhelmingly central to this unfolding experience. The frequency continues to rise, higher and higher. Humanlike entities are positioning themselves around me. One looks like it is ready to pounce right into me.

The frequency and intensity of the energy is immense. I gulp, more from dryness of mouth than fright or fear. But that gulp seems to cause the phenomenal energy to reset itself. The humanlike entities beseech me to stay still and remain silent. I duly oblige, as the frequency quickly reaches an excruciatingly impossible pitch. I remain motionless. The frequency is now reaching a truly impossible sonic level. It continues to rise, higher and higher, until it reaches a sanity defying level. And now, my situation has changed remarkably.

Now, something is inside of me. And not only is something inside of me but that something seems able to manipulate me from within. It is somehow able to either physically manipulate my internal physiology, or it is able to radically alter my perception of my anatomical physiology – to such an extent that it truly belies I am a living creature composed of blood and bone.

I am now as good as a marionette in the hands of a puppet master. There is no pain, but my body feels eerily and impossibly strange; as though it is synthetic, composite, fluidless, flexible, and constructible. There is hollowness in the midst of my limbs; the joints of which feel like they can be easily uncoupled and re-coupled. I feel devoid of all liquid content.

And yet my consciousness then was just as clear and as lucid as it is now.

A strange interior movement in the region of my throat makes it feel as though the function of my voice box has suddenly moved to the outside of me. I protest loudly: “Hey! You can’t do that!”

But it seems they already have, because now my voice sounds to be emanating from somewhere outside of me. My voice now sounds incredibly clear, and clipped, and far louder than usual. The shock of hearing my voice speaking from outside of me is mind blowing; to the extent that I cry out loud: “Whoa! Whoa! That’s impossible! That’s impossible!”

But it wasn’t impossible. I felt compelled to speak again and again and again, simply in order to marvel at hearing the incredibly unusual qualities now characterising my voice.

And at the same time, the interior of my upper body felt like it was undergoing the most impossible manipulations. Again and again I cried out aloud: “Hey! You can’t do that! That’s impossible! How can you do that?”

The entire situation was just so utterly impossible. And yet there I was, in my rational senses, being skilfully manipulated from within by an intelligence that was surely conscious of what it was doing to me; it was surely cognisant of my profound amazement and my immeasurable astonishment.

During the experience a remote part of my mind had capacity to suspect that this was a reward; this was a reward for me pursuing the DMT experience in an investigative capacity.

I was profoundly affected by this experience. As it came to a close I burst into tears; tears of shock and disbelief. I quickly dried my eyes and headed downstairs. My wife had heard me shouting. I lay down on the sofa without saying a word. But as I reflected, my emotions hit me really hard, and once again I burst into tears. My wife, showing great concern, asked if I was alright. And of course I was. I just needed to have an emotional reaction to balance things out. And as I composed myself, I felt that I had made a great stride, and secured significant progress with my research.

This invasive capacity opened up a whole new chapter in my research. The beings performed invasively; including within my brain, and on one occasion at the back of one of my eyes. An indoor experiment aborted at an early stage through my fear, resulted in very long, and very slender, tentacular-like quasi-physical portions of the powerful entity, slowly and palpably withdrawing through my interior physiology. These invasive experiences went so far as to stymie my capacity to breathe; either by slowly compressing my windpipe, or by steadily reducing its effective internal diameter, until gasping for breath and on the verge of panic, I would once again find myself alone and free to breathe.

Another invasive machination involved sealing up my lips from within, using that strange quasi-physical substance. On numerous occasions I suspected my lips were being tightly sealed shut from within. But my mesmeric state precluded the capacity or the courage to test the integrity of that seal. Implicit trust is paramount in these encounters. But as we have just heard, that trust can be severely tested. When I did eventually find the capacity to test that seal, by trying to open my mouth, it came as no surprise that I was completely unable to overcome its strength. And yet had I panicked, I have no doubt it would have vanished.

Time is marching on!

One should always listen to one’s instincts, shouldn’t one? A moderate dose inhaled indoors on a dull day, despite my inner voice fervently beseeching me not to proceed, was ignored. The outcome of that experience was a regrettable change in my mental health; one that I document only as far as I dare in what I hope will be my third book. The result of that experience, after a period of absence from DMT, was to take my research outside.

At that stage in my programme the hallucinatory visions had all but ceased; but heading into the garden introduced me to some of the phenomenally configured beings that were behind such bizarre encounters.

Here, now, I almost feel like saying nothing would be the best means of conveying my dumbfounded reaction to the incredible sights I witnessed while in broad daylight; phenomenally configured entities, ranging from large to vast – relative to my physical size. Some displaying geometry and symmetry making them appear as large, multi-milli-faceted, densely ethereal, rounded diamonds. One now knows beyond a shadow of doubt, humanity is not the pinnacle of evolution – and neither are we alone.

For me, those sightings represented a triumph in my research. But that’s not the whole story, because now, the experiences imposed by these beings had truly changed.

Just what does one experience of oneself when overwhelmed with a fight or flight situation, where one is powerless to fight and from which one cannot flee?

Now, the intensity of the encounters increased markedly. I experienced roughhousing; disturbing mind games; forcefully invasive encounters; and levels of drama, excitement and entertainment that no movie could ever possibly equal. On one occasion I violently ripped open my shirtfront. But only because I was incapable of tearing open my chest, and offering up my heart to the large and powerful being that was above me – capably testing the qualities of my soul.

There is very much more that could be said about these experiments, these experiences, these encounters and these beings. But I need to close by arguing why science cannot ignore this field of research, if it wishes to be true to its roots. One thing that really excites me about my findings – and the findings of others – is not only the fact that spiritual beings actually exist, but how such findings will be incorporated into western culture; how such findings will reshape that culture; how science will adapt to such findings, and what nomenclature it will adopt, to prevent it unwittingly or unwillingly getting into bed with theosophy and theology.

It could be argued, and indeed it has been argued, that science is based on materialism, and materialism excludes the idea of spirit. This idea of spirit, within and without humanity, is one which will need to be pushed if it is to challenge the orthodoxy of traditional materialist science.

I would like to end with two quotes. One from an author using the pseudonym Douglas D. Hunter – allegedly an assistant professor of physics, intent on reemphasizing the role of science in addressing mystery.

Science is a creative yet highly disciplined effort to find a truthful description of the world. The emphasis needs to be on creative. Discipline is a condition that can only be self imposed. In fact, the key issue is not discipline, rather it is honesty. If the profession becomes dominated by dogma, and if this domination is allowed to determine what is considered to be “the discipline” i.e. the profession, then the scientific endeavour has ceased to be science, and it has become religion. In fact it is the lowest form of religion, namely, it is a personality cult.

And finally, a truly weighty quote from ‘The DMT Diaries’, by Steven Turner:

…if the case studies of medically authorised N,N,DMT (the Strassman Studies) are anything to go by, then we may have to reassess all our current foundations of materialist science.

Quite so!

I am Dick Khan. Thank you for your interest in my research.

DMT NEEDS PIONEERS

Psychedelic mindstates are suppressed, meaning mainstream science is hindered from advancing its knowledge and understanding of the paradigm shifting potentiality wrought by these profound experiential states. To those who have experience with DMT, it must seem unthinkable that the effects of this mind manifesting substance will fail to revolutionise western science. If the practical inquiry and resulting philosophical debate cannot take place within our institutions of learning, then they will take place elsewhere!

A quiet revolution of unparalleled proportion is well underway. But unless you operate as a witting or unwitting participant of that revolution, or have an academic or lay interest in the developing entheogenic subculture, you could easily be forgiven for missing the slow and steady emergence of a new zeitgeist. Contrary to what some commentators may say, DMT and the growing entheogenic subculture is still very much an underground affair. It is nowhere near to exercising mainstream cultural influence, despite the emerging evidence of its influence in film. What must be clear to those observing this slowly emerging entheogenic revolution, is the strength of conviction conveyed by those brave enough and curious enough to have experienced the so-called spirit molecule for themselves. Few, if any, are ever disappointed. But how many return for a second or a third helping must be anecdotal in the absence of any meaningful statistical survey.

Save for the exception of a few approved research programmes, the widespread prohibition of entheogenic substances precludes practical academic research on the subjective effects of entheogenic substances that would otherwise benefit and advance human knowledge and understanding. There may be genuinely valid reasons for such a state of affairs, depending on which lens of consciousness frames the view. The lens of consciousness framing the view of political lawmakers is one of prohibition on the basis of a public health and harm reduction stance – undoubtedly fuelled by a media all too keen to peddle fear and hysteria. The significance of the relevance that entheogens are natural, or are derived from natural plant sources, seems almost lost in the modernity of our technologically dependent society. But this one single fact must surely underpin all the arguments that wish to promote the use of entheogens; whether in a ritualistic, sacramental, medicinal, psychonautical, or even a philosophically phenomenological exploratory capacity. Should the consensus lens of societal consciousness view entheogens as something positive and medicinal, or something negative and toxicological?

This is of course not to say that entheogens should be viewed as the equivalent for adults of what candy is to young children. The entheogenic experience is, by and large, a life changing experience – one should never underestimate the incredible latent power that these mind manifesting substances can unlock from within oneself, and their capacity to attract powerful discarnate intelligences into one’s immediate setting. It would be wrong to deny, however, that there can oftentimes be a playful element involved. But speaking from my own experiences of smoking DMT, it was seldom my mind alone that dictated or orchestrated the unbelievable experiences that rapidly unfolded and imposed upon my perceptions. So then, in terms of one’s mental health, the following salutary warning from the DMT Nexus website is wholly valid:

This experience is not for everyone, and not all who choose to open the door deal well with the questions it raises. It should never be undertaken lightly or treated in a casual manner. Those who approach it with little respect often pay a psychic price. Should you choose to proceed, be aware that integration issues may follow. What you find inside may change your life. It will almost certainly alter your deepest, most fundamental assumptions.

And even then, one’s choice of entheogen and one’s chosen route of administration are additional factors that will, or at least should, determine one’s set (mental and emotional capacity for the experience) and setting (the chosen location where the experience will occur). And then beyond that comes the experience. Here’s what DMT Nexus has to say about the DMT experience, in very general terms:

This chemical of revelation is what religions all point towards, it’s what all beautiful art tries to convey, what all of the greatest symphonies try to make you feel. DMT is your personal doorway, your connection to a filament of the divine, to the God/Goddess that lives within you and I and everyone. DMT is the key, the doorway is our soul, care to enter?

Such sentiments and statements will no doubt inspire some, and yet fill others – powerful individuals and certain organisations within nation states, perhaps – with scepticism, disapproval, or even downright dread. However, for those with the capacity to commit to the experience, and then pursue something of a lifestyle commitment to continuing that exploration in a research capacity, the rewards are truly magnificent. Those individuals are witness to something that is so utterly profound and of such a revolutionary magnitude that the consequences of its impact upon our science, culture and society are not only staggering, but simply without question.

Such changes do not occur overnight. Here, one could contemplate the esoteric considerations that pertain to the changing of an age – a slow and unstoppable paradigm shifting deconstruction of the past and an active construction of the now and the becoming. Indeed, one could be forgiven for suspecting that some hidden cosmic timetable, shaping both earth’s and mankind’s immediate future is steadily and silently ticking away. What will be in fifty years from now; a hundred years from now, or a millennium hence? For now though, institutional science is, by and large, fettered by nation state legislatures from exploring the very thing that should be completely revolutionising its most fundamental materialist assumptions and underpinnings.

It is on that basis that DMT (and entheogens as a whole) surely require serious practitioners to continue in the capacity of data collectors and data analysts – making individual cases for what one believes to be the truth of the mechanics and the phenomenology operating at the heart of the experience. It is only by documenting and sharing, discussing and comparing, and eventually coming to agree on common terms and nomenclature, in a rational manner, that this fledging science will find its legs and grow in strength and stature. Paramount to this advancement must be a complete commitment to honesty, and a complete distrust of ego-centred individuals pontificating that they have progressed beyond ordinary mortals and returned with insights unparalleled in human history. Entheogenic substances – and the realities they can invoke – can be powerful beyond belief, and the human psyche is not infallible to misperception and misdirection. The goal is, unsurprisingly, the same goal as traditional science – a knowledge and understanding of a facet of nature that is otherwise hidden from our unaided senses. How that new knowledge comes to be applied by individuals – and by nation states in the fullness of time – is an area thoroughly ripe for imaginative conjecture that will, in all likelihood, help to shape the unfolding future.

DMT – A NEW SCIENCE FOR INVESTIGATING AFTERLIFE REALITIES

This article is about possible afterlife realities, with reference to my practical research using DMT (dimethyltryptamine, aka, the Spirit Molecule), and my longstanding interest in the doctrines of Theosophy. I can confidently write about my experiences with DMT because in three years of practical research I undertook several hundred experiments. However, I cannot hope to write with complete confidence and authority about afterlife realities. But I can give opinion.

Nothing beats experience! As a young child I would lay awake in bed at night fascinated by the transition from being awake to falling asleep. I was determined to remain awake, even as sleep befell me – silly as that must sound. But an occasional consequence of that unwinnable battle was succumbing to an out-of-body experience, with the capacity to travel around the family home by dint of will. And so it was from a very young age that experience showed me there was something inside my body that could consciously exist outside of my body; something that had the capacity to pass straight through solid objects, such as the wooden door to my bedroom and the lounge.

Many years later, when I am all grown up, I am seated on the floor of my sunlit bedroom, trying to draw vapour from a 35mg dose of DMT down into my lungs. I am still relatively inexperienced with this astonishingly powerful substance. A strong wind is gusting noisily outside. I have already made three inhalations of vapour, but apparently nothing has yet occurred. In a frustrated huff I make one final attempt on the pipe. All of a sudden, a small and incredibly dense cloud of potent vapour is drawn deep into my lungs. By the time my head sinks back into the pillow I am absolutely and utterly convinced that I am dead. My cognitive capacities seem totally unaffected – I am otherwise in complete control of my rational senses. But equally, I have no doubt whatsoever that I am now dead. There is a profound stillness and an incredibly eerie silence, the like of which I have never before experienced. I can no longer hear the wind blowing. It seems that everything is totally and absolutely motionless…and I am now dead… it is absolutely without question!

That is a classic example of what some DMT investigators and explorers have coined ‘the little death’ experience. It is as profound as it is convincing. And it is emotionally challenging in the extreme. But perhaps even more profound is the assertion that such an experience – and indeed a great many DMT experiences – result from the interaction of a spiritual being with the temporarily amplified consciousness of the researcher. That is a really startling statement to make. But that is the finding from my extensive practical research with the Spirit Molecule. And no doubt many other committed researchers using DMT in an exploratory and investigative capacity will have arrived at the very same or a very similar conclusion. What science will make of such assertions has yet to be seen.

Many times during my research I have been completely enveloped within the mind of a spiritual being, therein I have witnessed the most incredible visual imagery imposing upon my perceptions, and in such a manner as to convince me that I have entered into another realm, another world, another dimension – peopled by strange humanlike entities, and displaying scenery or objects that are mostly impossible to describe. It is a really interesting fact of such an experience that the imagery always appears to be so incredibly highly defined as to make ordinary everyday reality appear second best. Behind such factual observations as that, a new science is begging to be explored; one that demands the very same rational focus as our traditional science – an investigative approach; one that seeks complete knowledge and understanding of the mechanics behind an experience that is all too often described as “bizarre” and “impossible.”

During three years of practical research I have seen my own consciousness bountifully spiralling out of me in a geometrically-configured ethereal torrent, filling the sky high above my small back garden. I have seen phenomenally configured spiritual beings that have wrung the most bizarre emotions out of me. I have had invasive operations undertaken within my physiology. I have been tricked and entertained, berated and subdued, and absolutely astonished at the things I have seen and experienced whilst in complete control of my rational and cognitive senses. Spiritual beings do exist. And on the basis that they exist then they must exists somewhere. In all likelihood, their existence is within a kingdom of nature totally unseen and unheeded by our ordinary senses. The significance of this to our western-minded cultural, societal, scientific and theological domains is truly breathtaking – almost difficult to comprehend in its fullness.

So then, on the basis that there is something within us that can consciously exist outside of our physical body; and on the basis that there are beings in existence that can exist without an organic body, and are outside the range of our unaided perception, what might that mean for the possibility of an afterlife? Well, the argument for that possibility can edge closer towards making an intellectually valid consideration for something mysterious occurring to our consciousness at the death of our physical body.

What though, do the Theosophical doctrines have to say about afterlife realities? I could simply state that the esoteric doctrines inform us that at death everything returns to source. The physical body will decay, and its constituent elements will duly return to their respective cycles; whereas the root of our consciousness will return to some higher realm, of which we have no sensible capacity to cognize outside of actual union with that ineffable source.

But if that really is what occurs at death, then shouldn’t our inquiring energies be focused upon trying to understand exactly what constitutes our unseen selves? Between our physical shell and our highest spiritual self, wherein lies our personality? What happens to that personality when we die? Or, to express it another way: From what source of hidden nature does my capacity to form a personality derive? When we begin asking: “What according the esoteric doctrines constitutes the inner composition of man,” it quickly begins to become quite a complicated matter. Such inquiries must then begin dealing with matters of divine spirit; spiritual soul; rational soul; animal soul; life principle; etheric double – all housed within and anchored to the temporary shell that is our physical body. How did such a thing ever occur? Does it not stir you to wonder?

Therein are the mysteries contained within Theosophy – those doctrines that deal with deeply esoteric and occult matters; those philosophies that the science of today just will not face up to. Today’s science cannot tolerate esoteric and occult lore, which it sees as imaginative fancy and airy fairy conjecture. And yet, in defence of that very same science of today, it is completely understandable why it values and thrives upon evidence. On the basis of my own research, I wholeheartedly contend that DMT is an incredibly valuable tool for investigating the hidden side of nature; nature which includes the hidden side of ourselves, as well as those spiritual entities unseen by our ordinary and unaided perceptions. Here, potentially, is the start to investigating possible afterlife realities, in a rational and focused manner; the beginnings of a new science that aims to addresses, head-on, those deepest mysteries about who we are and what our relationship is to the earth and that which rests beyond our corporeal vision.

DMT – A Quiet Spiritual Revolution

Do you buy it or do you make it yourself? DMT is the potent psychedelic drug famed for its intense trips. Popularised by Dr. Rick Strassman’s government sanctioned research programme back in the early nineties, Strassman concluded that he thought he was dealing with a spiritual phenomenon. This was and still is big news to those with an interest in such matters – whether from within academic circles or from the burgeoning number of underground adherents regularly testifying to the drug’s profoundly transformative power. When one considers the research that suggests this chemical is produced naturally within our brain, the subject becomes all the more interesting.

DMT has its roots in shamanic Amazonian rituals, where plant-based preparations create a potent brew known as Ayahuasca. The tribal people consuming this intoxicating concoction assert that it is able to put them in touch with the spirits of the forest. Whatever they are seeing under its influence, Ayahuasca has steadily streamed out of the Amazon basin and has spawned its own industry, based around the purported medicinal qualities it offers. Retreats, initiation ceremonies, detoxifying clinics and weekend communal events can all be found and booked online without any need to pack a suitcase or head overseas. This is all the more surprising when one realises that DMT is a Class A drug – ranking it alongside crack cocaine and heroin.

The more popular form of administration is through smoking – or rather, from inhaling the vapour produced from heating waxy DMT crystals that have been extracted from the dried roots of certain plants, within which the compound is relatively abundant. The extraction process, whilst not particularly difficult, does require due care and attention as some techniques involve household chemicals which are strongly corrosive, and flammable. This method of taking DMT is intense but short-lived, and usually favours those with lungs which are capable of inhaling smoke or vapour. Users commonly report visiting alien worlds, seeing strange landscapes, witnessing bizarre visions, and interacting with strange looking beings. One is generally subjected to intense hallucinations that appear to be far more vivid than real life; something more in keeping with the qualities of a lucid dream.

So how does all this equate to a quiet spiritual revolution? Well, according to some underground researchers – including myself – it really does seem that the Amazonian tribespeople are accurate when they attest to the reality of spiritual beings; discarnate entities with which they are able to interact through imbibing their traditional Ayahuasca brew. Essentially, a sufficient intake of DMT facilitates an interactive experience with a spiritual entity – a mind without a body is another way of describing the very same thing. This, however, is not a foregone conclusion. It’s more a question of how one interprets the nature of these strange and powerfully immersive experiences.

Does one interpret the hallucinatory visions as strange and bizarre content from the mind of another being; or does one interpret the hallucinatory visions as the content of one’s own mind – created by virtue of the powerful effect that DMT has on one’s brain, and consequently upon one’s mind? There is no definitive answer here. And given that both scenarios are dealing with the concept of mind, there is no means of measuring or of proving or disproving one interpretation over the other. But through undertaking repeated trips, with a concerted effort to understand the nature of the experience, some underground researchers have come to recognise that the experience is, in reality, a very profound and a very direct experience with something from the otherwise unseen and spiritual side of nature. Just because our eyes cannot ordinarily see such a reality, it does not necessarily mean that such a reality does not exist.

The consequence of engaging with such a powerful experience is that users are genuinely humbled, astonished, amazed, and even perplexed that such an occurrence can be an actual reality. The potency of this substance and the potency of the experience show DMT to be completely unique from all other prohibited drugs. It should go without saying that this experience is not for everyone, and even those who try it once, or even twice, may find the strength of both the substance and the experience is not something to be pursued regularly, if at all, or ever again.

But many regular users posting their experiences online, through the relevant internet forums and through their social media accounts, are finding a resurgent interest in their own spiritual health, as well as a creative and energetic drive to express that deeper aspect of their being. My own approach in this respect was to write about my accounts as I tried to fathom and understand the mystery at the heart of these profound experiences. I have no doubt whatsoever that the impact of the DMT experience upon our society and upon our culture will become significant, as this quiet spiritual revolution gathers pace.

MY UNSANCTIONED RESEARCH PROGRAMME WITH DMT

I have no idea how many people have ventured to try DMT. Outside of its underground following and outside of its interest to a small number of academics, the number of people who have heard of DMT, let alone tried DMT, must be small to a significant decimal percentage of population. That we all have an endogenous trace quantity of this mysterious substance as part of our biology is all the more fascinating when one has tested its powerful psychedelic properties. But even then, calling the experience ‘psychedelic’ seems strangely inaccurate. It is not quite psychedelic in the same way that LSD is psychedelic. Its ability to conjure up the most bizarre scenery while one’s cognitive capacities remain largely unaffected, other than by profound astonishment, makes it a somewhat unique if not overwhelming experience.

It seems reasonable to surmise that Dr Rick Strassman’s government sanctioned research with DMT, and the subsequent documentary directed by Mitch Shultz, introduced a great many individuals to what Strassman has coined, the Spirit Molecule. Without forgetting the greats, the rebels and the legends that preceded Strassman – names such as: Stephen Szára, Timothy Leary, Terrence McKenna and Nick Sands – I suspect it will be Strassman who is remembered for vicariously introducing DMT to the masses. And it was through Strassman’s research and Shultz’ documentary that I first came to hear about DMT. Following extensive online research – reading the accounts of others posted within relevant internet forums – I eventually decided to try my hand at extracting DMT crystals from mimosa hostilis, and inhaling the vapours from a makeshift pipe.

My online research into the DMT experience led me to believe that I would somehow be rapidly whisked away to an alien landscape, or a bizarre dimension populated by elves and goblins; a realm where unspeakable wonders are commonplace. But my very first success with DMT was inhaling the vapour from perhaps just a few milligrams, while sat upon my bed one sunny Saturday morning. With very great rapidity there was a sudden amplification of a high pitched sound in the midst of my head. I was immediately taken aback by such an obvious display of power. But what then caught my attention was the fact that the entire room – even the air within the room – looked so incredibly crystal clear, and the countless protrusions from the decorative finish upon the ceiling were all spangled in dazzling spectral colours. I did not appreciate it at the time, but behind even those relatively mild effects was a realm of science beckoning for investigation and rational analysis. What was that sound amplifying in the midst of my head? Why would the room suddenly seem wrought in crystal clear clarity? And what could possibly cause such dazzling spectral colours to radiate from the decorative protrusions upon the ceiling?

In the months that followed I continued to investigate the effects of DMT from the comfort of home. I was happy to undertake this research without any supervision, and really, the only person I could have asked to watch over me was my wife. It is true that no amount of reading can prepare you for the experience. I witnessed strange and impossible things that totally confounded my rational senses. There was much shaking of my head, and many incredulous mutterings along the lines of: “Impossible, that is simply impossible – impossible…impossible…impossible!” And yet time and time again the impossible would manifest and trample over my rational senses. It did indeed seem that I was actually venturing into another world, or another dimension – a place peopled with strange humanlike entities; a world filled with impossible to describe scenery and objects that defy explanation; a world that looked very different to this world. But one that looked strangely far more real than ordinary everyday reality. What on earth was going on?

I decided to investigate by establishing my very own research programme. Knowing the seriousness of this commitment I decided to make a few lifestyle changes and duly commenced my unsupervised home-based research programme with vaporous DMT. My sole intention was to try to understand exactly what was occurring in the experience, and how it was occurring. I had no thought to publish my research at that stage. I stopped frequenting the usual DMT internet forums – so as to avoid the influence of others – and from October 2013, I set to work. There were, of course, influences that would shape my thinking. I had a longstanding interest in esoteric lore and occult philosophy. Those interests were likely formed early in my childhood, as a consequence of several paranormal experiences, such as out-of-body excursions around the family home at night time.

In three years of research I undertook some 650 individual experiments with DMT. I was not setting out to take heavy doses, or to go further than anybody else; my intention was simply to try and understand the mechanics of the bizarre experiences. I implicitly understood that I was dealing with something of truly profound proportion; a mystery in which we were still operating at the data-collection stage. And I wanted to collect data, and analyse that data in order to understand what was going on.

Speaking for myself, based on the doses, the experiments undertaken, and my reflections and analyses of what I have experienced, the truth is both surprising and unsurprising. One should not be at all surprised to find that one is dealing with individual spiritual entities in this research. Whether one is ready for the truly devastating power that some of these beings are able to impose is another matter. I can categorically state that I have not undertaken any intergalactic travels, either in my body or out of my body. I can categorically state that having significantly amplified my consciousness with DMT, I have suddenly found myself immersed and enveloped within the mind of a spiritual being, whose own imaginative fancies have imposed upon my perceptions – and certainly given me the impression that I was in another realm, another world, another dimension.

I can categorically state that these beings have the capacity to manipulate one’s psyche and induce ecstatic states of laughter unlike anything you have ever experienced. I can categorically state that these beings have the power to convince you that you are dead. I can categorically state that these beings have the power to undertake the most bizarre invasive operations within one’s physiology. I can categorically state that I have cried and bawled like a little boy at what has been done to me. I can categorically state that I have experienced the unbelievable bountifulness of my own consciousness spiralling out of me and filling the sky high above me. I can categorically state that in my small back garden I have attracted and observed vast and phenomenally configured spiritual entities that look like they have no earthy business down at ground level.  I can categorically state that my outdoor research has attracted what many would describe as earth lights, or black orb UFOs. I can categorically state that I have been: entertained; tricked; terrified; left awestruck; dumbfounded; perplexed; and initiated into a way of thinking that would otherwise qualify me as doolally.

But life goes on! I go to work and I love my family. But I am not the same, and I never will be the same, because like other dedicated psychonautical explorers, I have experienced something that profoundly challenges the very fundamental foundations of western culture and western science, let alone one’s own ontological compass. It is not that change is coming, because change is already well underway. I cannot and would not be so conceited as to pretend that I have all the answers. Indeed, despite my best efforts, I contend that I have not even scratched the surface of this unfathomable mystery. Hence, may I encourage other dedicated psychonautical researchers to move toward publishing the findings from their own research programmes, so that we may further progress in the data collection stage?
